Website hosting and maintenance explained

The hosting provider supplies the server resources used by the website. The plan must suit the software, traffic, storage, email arrangements and level of support the business needs.

Price alone is a poor comparison. Ask what is included, where support comes from, whether safe copies are kept separately and what happens if the website outgrows the original plan.

The domain name and hosting account should also be distinguished. Moving the website does not necessarily require transferring the domain, and changing nameservers or email records without a plan can interrupt business email.

WordPress, its theme and supporting extensions receive updates. Those updates need to be applied carefully because software components can conflict or change behaviour.

Maintenance should also include suitable backups and basic security checks. A backup has value only if it contains what is needed, is recent enough and can be restored. The provider should be able to explain the recovery process without promising that no website will ever fail or be attacked.

Changing opening hours or replacing a photograph may be simple. Adding a new service, redesigning a page or developing a booking feature is different work. A maintenance agreement should say whether small edits are included and how larger requests are quoted.

Clients with full WordPress access can make ordinary content changes themselves. The provider may still recommend asking before changing page addresses, form destinations or software settings because those changes can affect search visibility and enquiries.

Hosting should not become an ownership trap. The business should retain control of its domain and be able to obtain the website files, database and administrator access needed to move to a suitable provider.

Ask what happens to paid software licences and email accounts when the service ends. These details are easier to settle before a website is built than during an urgent move.

The first year of hosting, updates, backups and security checks is included with the standard business website. Standard shared hosting then renews from €50 + IVA per year, with the exact price confirmed before work begins. The website can be moved elsewhere because the domain, website and content remain the customer's property.
